Choosing the right material for your kitchen splashback can be straightforward or challenging, depending on your preferences and how you plan to use your kitchen. Below, we’ve outlined the most common considerations people have when selecting splashbacks and the best solutions to meet those needs.

Functionality first

When choosing your splashback, function should always take precedence. Here are four key areas to consider:

Water and Stain Resistance

This should be the base requirement for a splashback, especially if it’s behind the sink or hob. You don’t want dirty water or grease stains soaking in and leaving permanent marks.

Durability

A splashback that needs frequent repair or replacement defeats its purpose. A good splashback should remain virtually brand new in appearance despite regular use.

Easy to Clean

The best splashbacks require minimal maintenance. A simple wipe-down should suffice to keep them clean.

Heat Resistance

While not the most critical factor, it’s essential if the splashback is installed behind a hob. It should withstand exposure to heat from flames or hot items.

The aesthetic of your kitchen splashback

Once functionality is covered, it’s time to focus on aesthetics. Knowing what you don’t want from your splashback material can make it easier to determine what you do want. Here are some popular options:

1. Matching the worktop

Using the same material as your worktop can be a great choice. Worktop materials inherently meet the functionality checklist, and matching them with your splashback creates a seamless, continuous design flow.

2. Large format porcelain slabs

Porcelain slabs are incredibly hardwearing, as they’re made from the same material as large-format floor tiles. Their closed-cell structure makes them highly resistant to stains and damage, while being effortless to maintain. Available in various finishes, including polished marble effects and natural stone looks, porcelain slabs offer a low-maintenance, designer splashback solution.

3. Glass

Glass splashbacks have been a popular choice for years for good reason. Glass is tough, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. It’s also available in a wide range of colours and finishes, ensuring a glass splashback that suits your style.

4. Stainless steel

For a commercial and polished aesthetic, stainless steel is an excellent choice. Its easy-to-clean surface is ideal for busy kitchens, though it does require a dedicated steel cleaner to maintain its original finish.

5. Ceramic or porcelain tiles

With thousands of designs and colours to choose from, tiles are a versatile option. Whatever vision you have for your kitchen, there’s likely a tile that matches it. Tiles are easy to clean and generally low maintenance due to their glazed and sealed surfaces. However, grout between tiles can stain if not properly sealed and maintained. Opting for tiles with small joints minimises grout and reduces maintenance needs.

Note: We do not recommend natural stone tiles for splashbacks. They are not water- or stain-resistant and require frequent resealing and maintenance over time.

Selecting the perfect kitchen splashback material involves balancing functionality and aesthetics. By prioritising water and stain resistance, durability, ease of cleaning, and heat resistance, you can narrow down your choices. From matching worktops to versatile tiles and durable porcelain slabs, there’s a splashback solution for every kitchen style and need.
