If you're anything like my clients, when planning a kitchen renovation, you probably spend a lot of time envisioning what you want. You've browsed countless magazines and scoured Pinterest for inspiration. You've looked at hundreds of different cupboard styles and colours. Perhaps you've developed a bit of an obsession with that pantry cupboard. You've set your sights on a large fridge freezer and a boiling water tap. Everything seems to be coming together. But have you considered what can make the most significant difference in your space?

That’s right, it’s the lighting.

Plan out your kitchen lights before work starts

Getting your lighting right needs to start well before any construction work. Your electrician will require details of all your light fixtures before they install a single cable. So where do you start with planning your kitchen lighting?

First, stop looking at actual light fittings. What you need to think about before you start buying any lights is where and what you want to light up in your kitchen. Usually, it's the work surfaces, the hob, the sink. You want to ensure adequate lighting for chopping your vegetables, preparing food, and cleaning up.

Kitchen ceiling lights can provide overall illumination, while under-cabinet lighting ensures that your work surfaces are well-lit. For additional task lighting, kitchen LED strip lights are an excellent choice, adding brightness directly where you need it.

You also want to be able to see people – family and friends you're cooking for and hanging out with. Kitchen island lighting can enhance this area, making it both functional and a focal point.

However, not many people need their floor to be brightly lit! Secondary lighting is usually enough for that.

What type of lighting where

Next, you need to think about the function of each lighting zone. For preparation and cooking, you'll need good, bright light. That doesn't mean it has to be cold, harsh, or glaring. Downlights and spotlights are not your only option but if you do go with them be thoughtful about where you place them. We’ve all seen downlights put in a grid across a whole room which can make you feel you’re in an interrogation chamber. Place those LED kitchen ceiling lights above your work surface where you need them. For lighting people, you'll want something softer.

You will also want to change the lighting mood for when you sit to eat or relax. Over-island pendants may bring texture and interest into the room. Or you may prefer something more minimal so as not to detract from the view or other features in the room. Wall lights are also a great way of bringing softer lighting in. Undercabinet lighting adds soft but practical light, banishing dark corners.

Choosing the right lighting fixtures

Now that you’ve thought about the type of lighting you need, you can start looking at the fixtures. For pendant lighting, pay attention to the shadows they will cast. Rattan or pierced metal may look really cool in the shop but when they are switched on they will make strange patterns across your room. Also, I always avoid ones where you can see the bulb. I find looking at bare bulbs hard on the eyes. For a stylish touch, consider kitchen light fittings that complement your overall design scheme.

Kitchen lamps can also work

And lastly, don’t overlook lamps just because it’s a kitchen. They can be a brilliant way to bring in soft light and create a warm, gentle glow for those dark evenings. Lamps can be a great addition to kitchen island lighting, especially when you want that cosier feeling in the evening. Cordless lamps and rechargeable bulbs are now becoming popular and more easily accessible and can be a great solution to bringing lamps into the kitchen without having to find a discrete placement for the power cord.

Additionally, under-cabinet lighting and kitchen cupboard lights can provide subtle illumination and ambience. These lights can highlight beautiful backsplashes and make it easier to find items in cabinets, adding both practicality and style to your kitchen.
